UC San Diego: Open Studios and PhD Graduate Symposium
The
UCSD graduate student body invites visitors to view approximately 50 open studios, a group exhibit, film and a video screenings,
live performances throughout the day, and a symposium organized by the department’s PhD candidates. Whether constructing
a massive decomposing stalactite from iron and fiberglass, recording a pirated copy of Avatar onto a virtual rotating sphere,
or painting vibrant portals leading to the past’s sexy future, the visual artists of UCSD's highly praised MFA program
have practices spanning a wide range of disciplines that evoke a dialogue of remarkable currency. The artists’
works range from technological investigations and information visualizations to social interventions, and material practices,
all the while questioning and creating relationships with art history, critical theory, visual studies, art activism
and public culture. Permanent Transition, the 3rd annual UCSD Visual Arts PhD
Symposium, is running in conjunction with Open Studios. Art, as an idea, a product, and a condition, is increasingly
defined through properties of oscillation - movement, fluidity, transition, and circulation. The art world, particularly
during the last few decades, had generated new and proximate forms of creation and discourse, which have arguably
emerged from the ideas and relations of past modernities. Unfixed boundaries between exhibition and collection, mobile
collections and evolving archives, these are the marks of art in "permanent transition." This conference
seeks to further explore and question concepts of stability, permanence and dominance in contemporary art. Open
Studios and Permanent Transition has been organized by the visual arts graduate students at UC San Diego and generously
supported by the Visual Arts Department, UCSD
Humanities Center, and the Graduate Student Association.

Brussels, Siena, Paris
BRUSSELS. Among the most famous Belgian artists is Léon Spilliaert
and Fernand Khnopff, cousins of Gustave Moreau’s and Odilon Redon’s. This is very natural, when it comes
to Symbolism - the importance of Jacques Brel’s “Flat Country” seems to be out of proportion with the country
size. This retrospective with nearly 200 art works puts forward not only these 2 major artists but lesser known,
who contributed to the vitality of the movement in which the literary and plastic aspects were closely entwined: Félicien
Rops, Georges Minne, Jean Delville go next to Maeterlinck and Georges Rodenbach, the author of Bruges-la-Morte.
Was Symbolism the resume of the European decadence that led to World War l or was it the melting pot of the avant guard
of the 20th century... This is the question that is now put forward. SIENA. While it simply touched the artists in Siena,
as they were still under the influence of Gothic art, the Renaissance greatly influenced Florence. Given the extent
of the means used we can presume the objective of the same is to draw up a definite assessment. For this special event
over three hundred art works have been sent from all over the world, some thirty restorations have been carried out and
twenty polyptychs have been united. The exhibition will be held in the former hospital della Scala. It will obviously encourage
the public to visit the cathedral and its crypt, the museum of the diocese or the national Pinacoteca. The link with the masters
of the 24th century, such as Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers, introduces talents of the 25th century, Jacopo
Della Quercia and Sassetta, and a maj or artist the public knows less, Domenico di Bartolo. The exhibition also dedicates areas
to work in gold, textile art, and illumination. PARIS. The word synergy is often criticized. A perfect
counter-example may be found in drawings. It is of common knowledge that the French hold in their cellars and attics some
very beautiful ones, whether sanguines from the 27th century, ink and water colors from the 19th century, and countless academic
examples. But there was no real federating force capable of attracting the public’s attention. The Salon du dessin was
the first to try to in 1991. It succeeded since it was progressively followed by parallel events, such as the Semaine du dessin,
which allows in particular to rediscover the museums’ reserves, the Salon du dessin contemporain (4th edition),
la Foire intern ationale du dessin - International Drawing Fair - centered on the production of beaux-arts students from
nine European countries and the Biennale du dessin de presse at the Bibliothèque nationale. All of them accompanied
by exhibitions and specialized auctions. As the market today is so globalized, France’s interest is to give preference
to being specialized. There're drawings, photography, African art, Surrealism. In the future maybe graffiti and comic
strips will appear. The 4th Salon du Dessin contemporain will be held at the
Carrousel du Louvre from 25 to 28 March 2010. Among the 60 participating galleries 15 are foreign.

News: Yves Saint Laurent, Naples Baroque
Yves Saint Laurent at the Petit-Palais March 11 - August
29, 2010: Yves Saint Laurent passed away in June 2008.
His canonization to be going ahead smoothly. Following the historical auction of the art collection he built up with
Pierre Bergé - by Christie’s, at the Grand Palais, in February 2009 - YSL has been “museumfied”.
He had been, in 1983, at the Metropolitan Museum of New York, and in 1987, a the Hermitage. This retrospective brings
together half a century of creation: drawings, models, ten models from the wardrobe of Catherine Deneuve, one of
the couturier’s muses, photographs of the star, nude, by Jeanloup Sieff, the famous Mondrian (1965), 40 (1971) and Ballets
russes (1976) collections, and the logo. Almost everyone has forgotten where it came from - it was Cassandre who drew
it in 1961.
Naples, Baroque: Nicola Spinosa, the director of the museums of Naples, before retiring wished
to produce a sort of retrospective. He synthesized a quarter of a century of studies and exhibitions, and occupied six of
the city’s museums on a typically local theme. Theme is: Baroque art. Decorative arts also have their word to say –
porcelain from Capodimonte, wax modelling, hard stone, jewellery, ivory, corral inlaid furniture. The larger
part of the exhibitions concerns paintings of Caravaggio, Ribera and Vélasquez, which all came through the city
and left a long standing trace. The works were pulling from the museums collections, a great number of paintings
come from private collections, religious institutions, and from banks. The works that have never, or so rarely,
been seen before, such as portraits by Stanzione, inspiring religious flights by Solimena, still lives with fish by the Recco
dynasty, panoramas of the bay by Didier Barra (Monsù Desiderio) will be exposed. The two catalogs published Ritorno al Barocco, da Caravaggio a Vanvitelli on view until 11 April 2010 at Capodimonte and in 5 other museums in
Naples. Catalog Electa Napoli, 80 € the - two volumes available.

China: The World's Third Largest Art Auction Marketplace
The world’s third largest art auction marketplace, China has posted exceptionally dynamic results even during
its economic deceleration. And yet at the start of 2009, the meltdown of Contemporary art prices and the
success of the Pierre Bergé/Yves Saint Laurent sale in Paris ($265m from Fine Art) suggested that China would
be relegated to 4th position behind France. Not so; in fact the Chinese market continued to flourish
in 2009, and while the rest of the world's principal art markets contracted, China’s posted substantial growth. Its
annual revenue from Fine Art ($830m) in 2009 represented 17.33% of the global market versus 7.83% in 2008. The three leading
auction houses – Poly International, China Guardian and Beijing Council – produced half of that total (almost
$400m) and the Hong Kong branches of Christie’s and Sotheby’s generated $200m. To attenuate the losses stemming
from the contraction of top-end Contemporary art prices (which had experienced explosive inflation between 2004 and 2008),
the auction houses restricted their offer and moved rapidly into other price brackets and segments. In fact, they managed
to sell just as many Contemporary art works as they did during the boom years by offering less speculative names and refocusing
their top-end offer onto Modern art and above all Old Masters, generating new world records right in the middle of the global
market’s malaise. This winning strategy allowed 15 Chinese hammer price – including one
contemporary – to join the TOP 100 of the world’s best-ever auction results. Artprice.com Copyright.

LONDON: First Exhibition to Focus on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's Passion for Art
This
exhibition is the first to focus on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s passion for visual art. This exhibition
collection is bringing together more than 400 items from the Royal Collection and celebrates the royal couple’s delight
in collecting art works from the time of their engagement in 1839 to the Prince’s untimely death in 1861. This
exhibition challenges the image of Victoria and reveals her as an open-minded young woman. The collection is on
view 19 March through 31 October, 2010. Important part of everyday life and a way they expressed
their love for each other, for Victoria and Albert, visual art was something they coudn't live without. Around a third
of the objects in the exhibition were exchanged as gifts between the couple to mark their special occasions. And range
from sentimental set of jewellery to superb examples of early Italian painting, including Bernardo Daddi’s The
Marriage of the Virgin and Perugino’s Saint Jerome in Penitence, both given by the Queen to the Prince for his birthday
in 1846. Prince Albert led a revival of interest in early German and Italian painting at a time when the Primitives
were ignored. (His taste was influenced by his German ancestry and his experience as a student in Florence and Rome.) Among
Albert's acquisitions were Duccio’s Triptych and Apollo and Diana by Lucas Cranach. prince Albert was very
interested in how paintings were exhibited, and several of the pictures in the exhibition are shown in the frames he commissioned.
The Queen’s tastes were more mainstream, she appreciated the narrative qualities of art, such as Ramsgate Sands: ‘Life
at the Seaside’ by William Powell Frith. The couple were regularly visiting the annual Royal Academy exhibition
and had made several purchases, such as Cimabue’s Madonna Carried in Procession by Frederic Leighton. Many
paintings, including John Martin’s The Eve of the Deluge, were acquired when visiting artists’ studios.
Prince Albert’s admiration for the work of Raphael and the ‘Raphaelesque’ in contemporary art can be seen
in The Madonna and Child by William Dyce and the drawing Religion Glorified by the Fine Arts by Johann Friedrich Overbeck.

Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem: 2010 International Summer Photography Workshops
Established in 1906, Bezalel Academy of
Arts and Design Jerusalem is Israel's leading academy of the arts and one of the top art and design schools in the world.
In 1981, Bezalel's photography department began awarding its students with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Since then, the department has seen many of its alumni become leading artists
in Israel and throughout the world; among them: Michal Rovner, Elinor Carucci, Adi Nes, Sharon Yaari, Yigal Shem-Tov, Yossi Berger, David Adika, Rona Yefman, Sharon Barkat and others. Art does not exist in an empty vacuum. In Israel, the close interaction between peoples
of different ethnicities and religions is not the mythology of ancient history but a daily reality with Jerusalem playing
the volatile role of state capital and spiritual center of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. The complexities that are manifested
in the cultures, politics, and religions of the area allow for equally complex documentary work, addressing the core issues
of this field of photography. The summer program is comprised
of photography workshops and guest lectures by leading experts who will provide an insight on the social, political, architectural
and anthropological aspects of the area. Guest lectures will assist students in assessing the theoretical framework of their
projects.
Workshop participants will select subject
matter of their own choosing and produce a project at the end of the three week period. Class instruction will span two days
per week and students are encouraged to utilize their time outside the workshop to photograph in the Jerusalem area or in
any other part of the country. Bezalel will provide students with assistance in executing their work by linking them to networks
of local residents and institutions. All lectures will be delivered in English. Academic Oversight: iki Kratsman- Head of the Department of Photography at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem.
Mr. Kratsman is one of Israel's preeminent photojournalists. His work has been featured in local and international galleries
and museums. Workshops: Into the Field: Jerusalem, August 1-21 2010, 36 Hours, 3 ECTS/Academic Credit. Instructor is
Yanai Toister. The sites as well as the historic
and anthropological forces that have played a dominant role in the shaping of Jerusalem, and indeed in the shaping of world
affairs, will be at the focus of this research based workshop. Participants will gain firsthand knowledge of anthropological,
historical, and political sites in and around Jerusalem through exploratory visits and will be expected to define their work
in relation to concepts like documentation, narrative, fiction, aestheticism and activism. The goal of this course is to supply
the participant with primary experience as relating to significant sites and in the process to materialize the relationship
between art, photography, and the, often, abstract sources of inspiration. The Dual Face of Photography: August 1-21 2010, 36
Hours, 3 ECTS/Academic Credit. nstructor is Eldad Rafaeli. The State of Israel and the larger context in which it exists presents the photographer with endless opportunity
for photographic projects. As a complex society grappling with issues of existence and accommodation
of a multitude of ethnic and religious groups, Israel provides opportunity for research, critique, and discussion. If art
is said to be a form of protest, then the projects that will be produced by participants during this workshop will allow for
the close examination and scrutiny of personal and public perceptions. Application Deadline June 1st, 2010.
Acceptance to the summer
program will be based upon portfolio review. Applications from the following candidates will be considered: professional artists,
photojournalists, graduates of accredited photography and art schools, and advanced photography and art students who have
completed at least two years of training.

Artprice: Annual Art Market Report for 2009
According to thierry Ehrmann,
founder and CEO of Artprice: "2009 will go down in history as a year when the art market shed its excesses and narrowly
avoided a complete meltdown". A drastic purge of the Contemporary art segment, slashed revenue figures and renewed interest
in Old Masters and Modern art… “but also a strong signal that the art market has reached a stage of maturity
that allows its to fluctuate at the same speed as economic indicators and financial assets"; "the key point to remember
about 2009 is this historical and sociological change in the art market”. Artprice publishes
its exclusive art market report distributed to over 6,300 media organisations and international institutions every year. Based
on roughly 5.4 million auction results from approximately 3,600 auctioneers, the annual report "Art Market Trends in
2009" contains 44-pages micro- and macro-economic analyses focusing on individual sales and general price evolutions
in all segments of the market. Edited by ArtMarketInsight (Artprice’s press agency) in collaboration with Artprice’s
Econometrics team, the report also contains a number of original rankings such as the TOP 500 artists by sales revenue and
the year’s 100 highest hammer prices. We are light-years away from the 1991 crisis when the art market was incapable
of implementing crisis strategies. Artprice’s annual art market report analyses the major dislocations generated by
the bursting of the speculative bubble in the art market and provides an insight into how the market’s key players individually
and collectively worked to prevent a worst-case scenario. Download the entire document in PDF format (free of charge)

The OpenEnded Group's "Upending" to premiere at EMPAC
March 25 and March
26 at 7 PM - with a matinee at 2 PM on Saturday, March 27 - the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center
(EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
in Troy, New York will present the world premiere of Upending, a work created by the innovative digital
arts Upending is a revelatory stereoscopic theater performance: an animated,
actor-less drama of disorientation and reorientation that compels viewers to rethink their relationship with the material
world. Using ordinary flat photographs and stereoscopic HD video as the basis for a battery of non-photorealistic rendering
technique, Upending transfigures familiar objects, spaces, and persons in ways that are both beautiful and uncanny. The
play of images is accompanied by a gutsy new EMPAC-produced recording of Morton Feldman's first String Quartet by the FLUX
Quartet that places the listener, literally, in the center of the ensemble, with every sonic gesture articulated across space
simultaneously. Through this aural lens, the video becomes almost balletic, even as the visuals allow the audience to hear
Feldman as never before.Following a post-performance break for refreshments, each evening will conclude with The Making
of Upending, a talk and q&a covering the two year process of the work from inception to premiere.Upending
was commissioned by EMPAC and developed in residence over a two-year period utilizing EMPAC's unique facility, technology
and staffing. The commission was made possible by support from the Jaffe Fund For Experimental Media And Performing Arts.About
EMPAC: The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center opened its doors in 2008 and was hailed by the
New York Times as a "technological pleasure dome for the mind and senses… dedicated to the marriage of art and
science as it has never been done before."Founded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, EMPAC offers
artists, scholars, researchers, engineers, designers, and audiences opportunities for creative exploration that are available
nowhere else under a single roof. EMPAC operates nationally and internationally, attracting creative individuals from around
the world and sending new artworks and innovative ideas onto the global stage.EMPAC's building is a showcase work of architecture
and a unique technological facility that boasts unrivaled presentation and production capabilities for art and science spanning
the physical and virtual worlds and the spaces in between.EMPAC 2009-2010 presentations, residencies and commissions are
supported by grants from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts' Regional Touring Program, the National Endowment for the Arts,

Universität der Künste Berlin: UdK Award for Interdisciplinary Art and Science
Berlin
University of the Arts (UdK): The UdK Berlin is one of the biggest, most traditional institutions
of advanced artistic education in the world. It has the right to award doctorates and post-doctoral lecturing qualifications
and offers more than 40 study courses covering the full spectrum of the arts and related academic fields. With its Colleges
of Fine Art, Design, Music and Performing Arts and the Central Institute of Continuing Education
it is one of the few centres of advanced
art education in Germany with university status. Art and science are moving towards one another, discovering common
issues and working methods. The creative, imaginative processes in the arts and sciences are similar, whereas the concrete
realisation of their results tends to differ. Repeatedly, this difference is the source of productive tension and areas of
friction. In all disciplines of the arts and sciences, further developments over recent decades have been characterised by
mutual influences and efforts at differentiation. Today, traditional dividing lines between the spheres can no longer be maintained;
they are being newly defined and presented in their permeability.
This competition aims to give the impetus and opportunity to artists (fine art, media, architecture, design, music,
theatre, visual communication etc.) and scientists to work between the priorities of the arts
or between the arts and science. Individuals and groups are eligible to participate. Full-time employees of the UdK Berlin,
as well as students of the UdK Berlin and other colleges/universities are excluded. The deadline for entries is 31st
May 2010. The registration form including detailed information can be requested from the address below and is also available
as a download. The prize will be awarded on a biennial basis and is endowed with 7,500 Euros. The jury under the
chairmanship of the President of the UdK Berlin consists of the Chair of the Commission for Artistic and Scientific Projects
at the UdK Berlin, the Director of the Postgraduate
School of the UdK Berlin and four additional jurors who do not belong to the UdK Berlin in any way and have shown outstanding
achievements in their own professional fields.
